Does sauna use improve running performance?

The protocol with the most direct evidence is a post-training sauna: roughly 25–30 minutes at 80–100 °C, three or four times a week, for two to three weeks. Scoon and colleagues found a meaningful improvement in run time to exhaustion in competitive male runners using approximately that protocol, alongside the expected plasma volume expansion.
The mechanism is heat acclimation without the training interference. Because the heat exposure comes after the session rather than during it, the quality of the run itself is unaffected, which is the main practical argument for the sauna over running in a heat chamber or overdressed.
The honest caveats deserve equal billing. The original study was small, the population was male competitive runners, and the performance measure was time to exhaustion rather than a race. The reported 2–7% range is wide, individual response varies substantially, and heat exposure carries genuine risks — dehydration, dizziness, and cardiovascular strain for anyone with an existing condition.
The practical fit: it is a low-cost addition for a runner already training well, especially before a hot race. It is not a substitute for any part of the training itself, and a runner whose base or fuelling is the limiting factor will get nothing from it.
