Why do runners hit the wall in a marathon?

The wall is muscle glycogen running out. Fat cannot supply energy fast enough to hold marathon pace, so pace collapses whether or not you are willing to keep pushing.

Hitting the wall is a fuel failure with a precise mechanism. Muscle glycogen falls low enough that the working muscles can no longer draw on it at the rate marathon pace demands. Fat is still available in effectively unlimited quantity, but it cannot be oxidised fast enough to replace the shortfall, so the sustainable pace drops sharply — often by a minute or more per kilometre, and usually within a very short window.

It arrives late because it takes that long to spend the tank: roughly 90–120 minutes at marathon pace without intake, which is why it is a marathon phenomenon and not a half-marathon one. It arrives at around 30–35 km for the same reason so many marathon stories converge on that stretch.

The falling blood glucose that accompanies liver glycogen depletion adds a second layer — light-headedness, difficulty concentrating, the emotional flatness runners describe afterwards. That component responds quickly to carbohydrate intake; the muscle-glycogen component does not, which is why fuelling once you are already in trouble helps less than you want it to.

Everything that prevents it happens before the event: arriving fully loaded, choosing a pace you can actually sustain, and taking carbohydrate steadily from early in the race rather than starting when you feel you need it.

How do you avoid hitting the wall?

Three things, all decided in advance: arrive with full glycogen stores, pick a pace your fitness actually supports rather than the one you want, and take carbohydrate steadily from the first half hour at a rate you have practised. Starting to fuel when you feel empty is too late.

Is the wall physical or mental?

Primarily physical — it is glycogen depletion in the working muscle, and no amount of resolve restores the substrate. The accompanying mental fog is real too, and comes from falling blood glucose as liver glycogen empties.
