Polarized vs pyramidal training: which is better for a marathon?
Both put most volume at easy intensity. Polarized skips the middle zone; pyramidal keeps a moderate amount of it — which suits the marathon, because the race is run there.
A polarized distribution splits training between very easy and very hard, deliberately minimising the middle. The reasoning is that Zone 2 work carries meaningful fatigue cost without the distinct adaptive signal of either neighbouring zone, so time there is better spent at one extreme or the other.
A pyramidal distribution keeps a descending staircase: most time easy, a moderate amount at threshold, a little hard. The reasoning is equally straightforward — threshold work is directly trainable, and for longer events the sustainable-pace ceiling is the binding constraint on performance.

Which should a first-time marathoner use?
Pyramidal, and lean heavily on the easy base. For a first marathon the limiting factors are almost always durability and fuelling rather than aerobic power, so volume at easy pace plus some marathon-pace rehearsal beats a sophisticated intensity scheme.
