Does a net-downhill course make you faster?
Less than you would expect. The metabolic saving from descending is much smaller than the cost of climbing, and sustained descent damages muscle in a way that shows up late.
A net-downhill course does help, but the benefit is asymmetric and often overestimated. The Minetti cost curve shows that running downhill saves considerably less energy per metre of descent than running uphill costs per metre of climb, so a course with equal ascent and descent nets out slower than flat, and a net-downhill course gains less than its elevation drop suggests.
Boston is the canonical illustration. It has a substantial net drop and a reputation as a hard course, because the descent is front-loaded, the climbs come between 25 and 34 km when glycogen is running low, and the long early descent loads the quadriceps eccentrically before the hills arrive.
That eccentric loading is the part the metabolic model misses entirely. Running downhill requires muscles to contract while lengthening, which causes far more mechanical disruption to muscle fibres than the concentric work of climbing. The bill arrives late — as quadriceps cramping and an inability to hold form in the closing 10 km, on a course that felt generous early.
The practical advice for a net-downhill race is to include downhill running in your training so the eccentric loading is not novel, and to resist the free speed in the opening kilometres. The descent will still be there later; your quadriceps might not be.
