Do carbon-plate shoes actually make you faster?

On average yes — around 4% better running economy against a racing flat — but the individual response ranges from under 2% to over 7%, so the mean is not a promise.

The best-known measurement comes from Hoogkamer and colleagues, who found roughly 4% improvement in running economy for a carbon-plated racing shoe against mass-matched conventional racing shoes, in 18 of 18 runners tested. The consistency of the direction is as notable as the size.

The mechanism is a combination of high-compliance, high-resilience foam returning more of the energy stored on landing, and a stiff plate that alters ankle mechanics and reduces the energetic cost at the metatarsophalangeal joint. It is not, as sometimes described, a spring that propels you — the plate mostly changes where and how the foam and the foot do their work.

The individual spread is the part that matters when deciding whether to buy a pair. Follow-up work reported responses ranging from about 1.7% to 7.2% between runners. Some runners get very little. There is currently no reliable way to predict who, short of trying them.

Two practical consequences. A 4% economy gain does not mean a 4% faster race — at marathon pace it translates to something closer to 2–3% in speed. And the shoes are less durable and mechanically demanding in a different way from trainers, so they belong in races and key sessions rather than in daily volume.
